Retirement? What retirement? I'm in my late 50s with 2 small kids still at home. I figure I've got at least 20 more years of shelf life left in my profession.

As for where I'd go? No need to relocate to paradise when I already live there. Laguna Beach California, population only 23,000, is perhaps the most beautiful coastal town in California with very active art & theater scene, great restaurants, close to major universities, close to 3 major airports, very close to several beautiful boat harbors, has pristine beaches (consistently awarded cleanest beach & water in all of SoCal), practically non-existent crime rate, a beachy-yet-cultured population, and a very quiet-laid back feel. Only drawback is a rather hefty pricetag, since Laguna Beach is among the most expensive zip codes in the nation. No worries ... I'd rather work forever and be able to stay put than retire to a lesser place!

We have begun our research as to where we may want to retire. Top priority for us is walking distance to the ocean as well as a "small town" downtown, and our "what-we-want-list" looks like this - must have one awesome burrito place; tip top martini joint; good, spicy Thai restaurant; locale for that perfect cup of morning java (Starbucks/Peets are “okay”, but a neighborhood brewery would be ideal); local brewery with just-right-suds; corner grocery store with a bit of everything; bakery for that fresh morning or afternoon pastry; and a wine shop with a nice diversity to satisfy our love of good vino. Based on this, we are leaning toward Pacific Grove in California!

If I had the chance and money and family responsibilities were no object, it would be Charleston, South Carolina. A beautiful city that is small and walkable, but with fine dining and a sense of history. I love that town.

Great poll. I can't imagine retiring anywhere but where I live in Auburn, California.
