Boomers Combine Work/Community Service
A few weeks ago, I asked you to give me hope, writes Jane Glenn Haas in the Orange County Register.
With the stock market skidding and the unemployment rate leaping, what’s ahead for baby boomers who planned to retire soon?
Too many of you have e-mailed me about losing your job in this economy.
“Older employees are the first to go because we make more, I guess,” wrote Susan, 61. She says she has spent 32 years with a local Orange County company, rising to a managerial position, only to lose it all at the same time her nest egg is “evaporating.
She’s experiencing what one economist calls a “perfect storm” for older workers — losing investment benefits for retirement and losing a job at the same time.
What does this scenario do to the plans of boomers who were looking forward to “giving back” as volunteers or maybe part-time employees of a non-profit after retirement?
I heard from 129 of you. You wrote from Orange County, from Syracuse, N.Y., from Phoenix and from San Diego, as well as points in between.

Interesting post and blog. Relevantly, many prominent experts and publications have pointed out that Obama is part of Generation Jones, born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and GenXers.
This link takes you to a page you may find interesting: it has, among other things, excerpts from publications like Newsweek and the New York Times, and videos with over 25 top pundits, all talking specifically about Obama’s identity as a GenJoneser:
