Anticipating the Flood of Retiring Boomers
It is a bad time for a crisis in retirement accounts. But, then, what would be a better time?
Baby boomers, according to reporter Dave Bakke, are starting a trickle of retirees that will soon become a flood. People who are reaching retirement age this fall or next year have to be thinking twice and three times as they see their nest egg scrambled and fried.
Larry Johnson, a CPA at Sikich in Springfield, Ill., has some advice for people planning to retire.
“I always suggest that people replace their hot water heater before they retire,” he says. “Because when you retire, and the hot water heater goes out on the first day, you start thinking, ‘This is what my entire retirement is going to look like.’”
On a more serious note, Larry says there are several good pre-retirement planning books available at most bookstores. He tells clients to find and read them. He notes that funding retirement is getting to be such a big issue that some local churches are sponsoring financial-planning seminars to give members peace of mind during the crisis.
