Yes, we do need new role models to light the way to the next phase, whether you call it retirement or not. Our generation often equated success with huge salaries and impressive titles, especially during the 1980s. Which is part of the reason why retirement seems scary to us. Who are we without our careers? It helps to have a vision or mission for our “life’s work.” Thomas Moore has a lot to say about this in his newest book, which would make great companion reading to “Smart Women Don’t Retire.”

This seems like an exceptinally timely book. “Since we are without guidelines or role models to conjure up from the past, it can leave us feeling isolated and adrift.” Sadly, this is affecting not just the Boomers, but the younger generations as well, who are burning out in their primary careers at a faster and faster rate. At last we are starting to build some resources to guide our futures.
