I think the problem is an elimination of all "final authority" in our culture.

With the internet, sources of information are everywhere and there is no test for the validity of sources. We "google" and believe what we read thinking that the author wouldn't fabricate information. But they do.

I sure hope we are not the last generation who know right from wrong - good from bad - honesty from fabrication.

Bill,

I wish all "stands" against the machine worked out as well as this one. But it's good now and then to hear that whistleblowers and others have their come uppance.

I think ethics is more than just doing what's right by someone, or being honest. Certainly this is a critical expression of ethics. But I was in a professional environment in mental health that was backward...and professional therapists and others didn't really want to look at it. I did feel professionals sensed there was something wrong. But don't look, don't tell. I believe this contributed to a demeaning of patients and the practice where too much money was being wasted and clients were not getting anywhere near the benefit of what was possible to provide clinically. And the system grinds on. Same with the entire health care system. Is it ethical for such a system to be sustained when it is bankrupting so many, costing government its solvency, and providing less and less of what the general population needs (who after all, has paid and is paying for this system to begin with). Is this ethical?

Ethics is not just being honest and forthright, doing the right thing in a specific instance. It's thinking on a higher level about our social behaviors, institutions and budgets that express who we are and respond to real human need.

Sadly, I think few in our society approach this level of ethical reflection. Everything is commercialized and run by MBAs. Everything is for sale.
