My Personal BABYBOOMER RETIREMENT Book

Are you entering that “empty nest” stage and wondering how to cope? Easy, if you follow the advice of Linda Richard, author of a new book on baby boomers. She says, just think about what’s important to you … NOW.

I am truly amazed at how good I feel almost every day and I’m fifty years old! Remember how you felt about fifty year old people when you were fifteen? Hmm! Definitely an attitude adjustment is required now. I feel better now that I am fifty than when I was fifteen. Perhaps it’s becoming wise to my years, or perhaps it’s because I committed myself to an even healthier lifestyle … or perhaps it’s because that’s just the way it is at this stage in life.

I have also become aware that lots of people do not pay enough attention to their health and well being. I have a hard time trying to understand how people do not see their health as a number one priority in their lifestyle. Why can’t they see that? Almost every day, I feel so good! I am so grateful for my good mental and physical health. And I see people in my world and the world, struggling with mental and physical health. I wonder how I got so lucky! I also wonder why other people can’t take the time to take care of themselves too.

For 33 years now, I have been in the workforce, and still going strong. I am blessed with three (now adult) children and I am entering into the empty nest stage. I have been preparing for this stage and also planning for it. I want to do something for me, have something of mine.

Learning from the aging process of the elders in my life, I can see how they have down-scaled a lot of financial and material goods. To them, less is more. Less means clear thinking. It’s the whole ‘cleaning up the nest’ syndrome. I’ve thought about that my self and I plan to do the same.

I want to plan ahead for my retirement years; there’s nothing uncommon about that. Right now it’s still the ‘too young to retire’ stage and yet I’m too close to that stage to put it off any longer. So at this point between ‘empty nest’ and ‘actual retirement’ it’s time to do that ‘something for me’. So I did!

I took into consideration the three most important factors in my life now. Number One is, I am at the crossroads of parenting and the empty nest stage which means this is the time to assess my new life. Two is, I am in great physical and mental health, which means I am vitalized and still quite capable of being productive. And Three is, I am creeping towards the retirement years with time to plan accordingly.

Armed with those factors, I decided to create a book focused entirely on retiring baby boomers. After all, I will be one myself, and soon. This is the ‘something for me’ project, combined with what should be a priority for every baby boomer. So by creating a book that focuses exclusively on baby boomer lifestyles, perhaps it will be simpler for baby boomers to pay attention to the important issues in their lives.

With that in mind, I created ‘My Personal BABYBOOMER RETIREMENT Book’! It is packed with practical issues fundamental to our retirement years. Topics start with family, health, fitness, and contact information. A Personal section encourages you as a baby boomer to reflect and/or create a brief bio of your life, realize your lifetime achievements, or record some wisdom of your years. The Personal section also offers pages for favorite pictures to be inserted to keep fond memories. Another section, which is quite common for baby boomers, is travel with a record-keeping log to assist baby boomers in all travel situations. A most important feature of the book is the personal journaling section. This is where your personal wellness, mind, body, and soul may be helpful during the retirement transition.

So there, I did it! I accomplished what I set out to do. I created a book that can reach out to every baby boomer and give each and every one an opportunity to make a positive change in their own lives, not only for themselves but for those loved ones around them. Perhaps that is why I feel so good almost every day.

  1. Great idea! As a counsellor I encourage people to journal as part of a healthy lifestyle. This book appears to integrate journalling with other aspects of one’s life. Looking foward to receiving my copy.
